Hosting the Southwest Section Spring 2013 Meeting

The Bakersfield Chapter is proud to be the host chapter for the Southwest Section Spring Meeting and is currently working on all aspects of planning for an outstanding and successful meeting. When our fly in guests arrive at Meadows Field they will be directed to the Bakersfield Jet Center at Loyd's Aviation where their aircraft will be parked in shaded parking and they will receive a wonderful Bakersfield welcome with light refreshment. We begin with a lovely wine tasting event on Thursday, May 2, at Café Med in Bakersfield. On Friday a white water rafting experience is offered through River's End on the Kern River with lunch provided. On Friday evening we will dine at Noriega's Basque restaurant. Saturday is our meeting time in the morning, and our 49½s will have the opportunity of touring the Black Gold tour at the Bakersfield Museum. Saturday afternoon an optional trip to Minter Field is planned with rides in a bi-plane as an additional option. Our guests will also have the option of attending educational seminars on recreational flying to remote airstrips by Richard Lach and an iPad seminar by Alden Lewis. A tour of the Mill Creek area and antique shopping are also scheduled. Saturday evening there will be a no-host bar and banquet dinner at the Bakersfield Marriott with Carrie Reinhardt, an F-16 test pilot and 99, as our guest speaker. Musical entertainment will be provided at each of the evening meals, as well.

Governors' Visit

We had the pleasure recently of showing our Southwest Section Governor, Penny Nagy and Vice Governor, Carol Andrews all of the great places we will share as part of the 99s Section Meeting here in Bakersfield from May 2 - 5.

Banquet Preparations

Yummy! Janice Sullivan, Elaine LeCain, and Joan Paynter sample the delicious meal for the banquet at the Bakersfield Marriott Hotel.

March 2013 Antelope Valley Poker Run

This year our Bakersfield chapter was well represented at the Antelope Valley 99s Annual Poker Run, on Sunday, March 24th. Elaine LeCain, pic, flew Jacqui Talley-Sickles and Heidi Stoepple to Tehachapi, California City, Inyokern, Mojave and Lancaster airports. We had a great time and Elaine and Heidi actually had winning poker hands! Jacqui was our runner and she and Heidi were great navigators, using an iPad and charts. Heidi saved us from trying to land at a military field as we were looking for Inyokern. The weather was absolutely crystal clear with virtually no wind. It was a great day.

International Meeting

This year at the International Meeting in Bozeman, Montana, all chapters are being asked to contribute a square with the signature of each of their members. The squares will be put into a large quilt made up of material that each chapter sends to represent their chapter. Hopefully, the finished quilt will contain the signatures of all current 99s, all 4,768 of us, on material representing all the chapters, all 193! It is quite a project...

Chapter Birthday Celebration

In November of each year we like to celebrate the 99s founding. This year we decided to also celebrate our own chapter's 65th anniversary. The Petroleum Club chef designed our special cake.

2012 Pilot Proficiency Classes

The Bakersfield 99s are co-sponsoring a few safety seminars and hope to raise some money to keep the scholarship funds coming. We need your help! February 11th at 9am is the first safety seminar and we need your baked goods. Please consider baking up something to sell. We need cookies, muffins, brownies, cupcakes or even a couple pounds of coffee. We could also use some help at the sign up/raffle desk. This will take only a few hours of your time and we, as well as future scholarship winners, would really appreciate it. Please drop off your baked goods by 8:30 am at the EAA building (North side of Rocket Shop at Bakersfield Muni). Please contact me if you would like to drop off the baked goods the day before. Also give me a call if you can help at the desk. Thanks. Elaine LeCain 661-319-8565.

Applications are due by December 31, 2011, and the selection of scholarship recipients will be announced at the February 2012 Bakersfield 99s Chapter meeting.

2011 Pilot Proficiency Classes

Benefiting the Bakersfield 99s Aviation Scholarship Program

In winter/spring 2011, the Bakersfield 99s debuted a series of Pilot Proficiency classes to help local pilots, student pilots, flying companions and CFIs improve and refresh their piloting skills. Classes were held at the Rocket Shop Cafe at Bakersfield Municipal Airport. The classes, which were well attended, raised over $1900 to fund the chapter's Aviation Scholarship Program.

Bakersfield Chapter Storage Clean Up Day

Storage Cleanup With a history that dates back more than a half century, things sure do accumulate! Thanks to our trust Chair Elaine LeCain, Secretary Donna Webster, Treasurer Janice Sullivan, Membership Chair Joan Paynter plus 49½ Michael Sullivan for sorting through all the treasures.

2009 Airmarking

Airmarking L45 In spring 2009, dozens of Bakersfield 99s turned out to prep and paint the airmarking at Bakersfield Municipal Airport. Working in cooperation with the City of Bakersfield and with complementary technical assistance from Pasquini Engineering, chapter members completed the lengthy airmarking in one fun-filled day.
